Director of Operations, Mission Critical

Location: Treasure Coast, FL

Compensation: Salary of $225k – $250k plus 50% bonus and $5k travel + car allowance

Travel: As the business requires.

About the Role: You’ll run operations and own the financial results for a mission critical mechanical portfolio at a commercial mechanical contractor. You’ll lead senior project managers, project managers, and project engineers, and you’ll be accountable for delivery from buyout through closeout, for how work gets bid, and for the GC and owner relationships that bring in the next award. It’s a senior operations and business development seat that reports into executive leadership.

This is a strong fit for someone who has already run a $50M+ P&L in mechanical contracting and wants one role where operations, pre-construction, and business development come together. You’ll have a real say in what gets bid, how it gets built, and which relationships the division invests in.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Lead project teams from buyout through closeout, including preplanning, prefab, job setup, and handoffs between pre-construction and operations
  • Own job cost performance across the portfolio: labor productivity, billings, collections, purchasing, and risk
  • Coach PMs and superintendents ahead of monthly project reviews, and sit in on those reviews
  • Set change order strategy and step into negotiations when the situation calls for it
  • Own schedule health: manage delay impacts and recovery plans, plan around equipment and material lead times, and build trade stacking into the plan so crews and trades stay out of each other’s way
  • Oversee estimating and bid strategy, including bid/no-bid decisions, scope review, and final number sign-off, and review proposals and scope letters before they go out
  • Build and maintain relationships with GCs and owners, manage the sales funnel and the resources behind it, and represent the company at industry associations and customer events
  • Develop PMs and senior PMs through goal setting, regular feedback, and performance evaluations, and partner with other leaders on workforce planning and hiring
  • Set the tone on safety by walking jobsites, supporting the safety program, and holding field teams to it
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives for the division and the company

About You:

  • 15+ years of construction project management experience, with significant time in mechanical contracting
  • Experience managing a P&L above $50M
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical piping and sheet metal systems, and the ability to read construction documents
  • Proven financial acumen across project financials, forecasting, and margin
  • Expert-level schedule management: you can build, read, and update Gantt charts, and you know how delays ripple through a job and how to claw time back
  • Solid command of lead times and trade stacking for planning
  • Contract, change order, and risk management expertise
  • Experience coaching and developing a team of PMs, including senior PMs, and writing performance evaluations
  • Proficiency with project management and estimating software
  • OSHA 30 certification (OSHA 10 at minimum)
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to run several projects and priorities at once
  • Preferred: experience on large, complex projects such as mission critical, healthcare, or industrial
  • Preferred: background leading projects in a prime or GC-style role
  • Preferred: PMP, CCM, or similar certification

What We Offer:

  • A senior operations seat over a mission critical portfolio, with ownership of the P&L and the team that delivers it
  • Direct access to executive leadership
  • A voice in bid strategy and the bid/no-bid calls that shape the pipeline
  • Leadership of a deep bench of senior PMs, PMs, and project engineers
  • Visibility with GCs and owners through association and customer-facing work
  • Room to shape strategy for the division and the company

  • Max. file size: 100 MB.
