Application Engineer
Growing HVAC
Function: Engineering
Location: Minneapolis–St. Paul, MN
About the Role:
You’ll be the technical resource behind the equipment at a commercial HVAC equipment manufacturer, supporting the rep network that sells the product, the design engineers who specify it, and the contractors who install it. Day to day that means selections and performance analysis, submittal and spec review, application and derating questions, and the non-standard requests that do not fit neatly in the catalog.
This is a strong fit for someone who likes the engineering work but does not want to disappear into it — you’re the one the rep network leans on when a job stops being straightforward, and the answer you give often decides whether the product holds the spec. Factory side also means you see the equipment from selection through startup, with design engineering and the production floor close enough to actually get answers.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Run equipment selections and performance analysis on projects coming through the rep network
- Be the technical answer for reps, design engineers, and contractors — sizing, application limits, and derating for actual site conditions
- Review submittals and specs to confirm the equipment being proposed genuinely meets the basis of design
- Scope and price non-standard and custom requests, and work with design engineering on what is actually feasible
- Support order engineering — turn a sold job into a clean, buildable order with the right options and accessories
- Train rep sales engineers and MEP engineers on the product line and the selection software
- Work with manufacturing on constructability, lead time, and what a special will really cost to build
- Handle startup, warranty, and field technical questions when an installation gets complicated
About You:
- 5+ years in HVAC application engineering, equipment selection, or a closely related technical role — required
- Strong grasp of commercial HVAC systems and equipment — air handling, chillers, or unitary, depending on where you came from
- Able to read plans and specifications and hold your own in a conversation about a basis-of-design spec
- Fluent in selection software and Excel, and able to explain performance data to someone who is not an engineer
- BSME or an equivalent hands-on technical background — either one works here
- Fast, clear communicator: reps and engineers should call you because you answer quickly and you are right
- Preferred: time on the rep or contractor side, or experience applying equipment to non-standard site conditions
What We Offer:
- A technical seat with real customer contact — you are not buried in the back of the building
- Factory-side visibility, with design engineering, manufacturing, and the sales channel all within reach
- Deep product knowledge, which is the most portable asset in this industry
- Structured product and application training
- A path toward regional sales, product management, or engineering leadership, depending on which way you want to grow
- Full benefits package
